THE CHALLENGE

The client experienced a sophisticated security breach when a user’s Microsoft 365 email account was compromised. The attacker gained access and carefully reviewed the user’s historical emails to plan a targeted fraud attempt. By creating hidden mail rules, the attacker obscured their activity and used a previously sent invoice email as a vehicle to request payment to fraudulent ACH details — all from within the compromised account. Microsoft 365 security tools failed to detect the activity.
